The Sportsman combines heritage (built in 1930 as an ‘improved pub’) and modernity (at the forefront of the real cider movement and the creator of the Huddersfield International Crisp Festival!).
We’ve graced the pages of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide since 2012 and are proud winners of Huddersfield CAMRA’s Cider Pub of the Year for several years running. Of course, as you would expect from a Beerhouses pub, we also offer an excellent range of cask ales as well as a weekly Dram Club, celebrating featured whiskies.
We’re known for our tasting events and manager, John Fletcher, is also known as an Honourable Knight of The Brotherhood of the Pink Elephant, as designated by Huyghe Brewery due to his exceptional conditioning of Delirium beers on the bar. It’s what he insists his friends call him.
Food at The Sportsman
We offer a range of bar snacks, including hot pork scratchings and a wide variety of crisps and nuts. You can also order food from Big Joe’s next door via the hatch in the beer garden to eat in the pub.

Our nominated charity is Project Youth Cancer, whose mission it is to change the way that young people experience cancer. In 2024, we set ourselves a huge target to raise at least £6000 for the charity and a huge target requires a huge challenge. Working with Huddersfield brewers, Magic Rock Brewing, we created the Yorkshire 3 Pints Challenge, which involved carrying 3 barrels up and down the Yorkshire 3 Peaks. This event, and several other fundraising activities resulted in us raising £6600. You can see more information here.

It's Thursday which can only mean one thing... It's DRAM CLUB DAY!!! That beautiful day of the week where we select a whiskey from our vast collection and encourage you all to try a dram of it by slapping on a cheeky discount.
And this isn't just any Dram Club Day, it's the last one before our St Patrick's Day Whiskey Tasting tomorrow evening so we thought it'd be rude not to showcase a top notch Irish whiskey! That's why today, our dram of the week is the magnificent Copeland Merchants’ Quay 5 Year Old 😍
From Copeland Merchants’ Quay comes a lively five-year-old Irish single grain matured in American bourbon barrels and finished in both Moscatel and Pedro Ximenez casks. The result is a bright, sweet and approachable grain with layers of honeyed fruit, floral richness and gentle sherry depth. It was bottled at 46% ABV, natural colour and non-chill filtered.
Was £5.70/8.50... NOW £5.20/8.00!!! See you soon 🥃
And if you get a taste for Irish Whiskey, we still have tickets available for the St Patrick's Day Whiskey Tasting tomorrow night at 8PM, tickets available below:

Yesterday we sent John and Ryan off to Manchester for Northern Bar and Restaurant 2026! Whilst it may seem like an easy job to drink lots of lovely beer all day, these events are a big reason why we're always the first to spot industry trends, up and coming breweries and why The Sportsman always provides such an incredible selection of beverages!
On their travels they found some very interesting crisps for the Huddersfield International Crisp Festival this year as well as a fairly new brewery that both Ryan and John have described as one of the most exciting breweries they've come across in years. Make sure you follow our socials because we'll definitely be organising something with them as soon as we can!
See you soon 🍻
