Beerhouses took over The Sportsman in 2009 and we set about restoring its Art Deco beauty, winning an English Heritage Pub Design Award in 2010 and being granted Grade II Listed status shortly after. It retains many original features and is renowned for its distinctive curved wooden bar. The gents’ toilets are a joy to behold – probably not a statement you can make about many men’s loos in a pub 😬 – with original urinals and tiles depicting 5 popular sports of the day. We also have a beautiful beer garden, which we have dubbed The Hanging Gardens of Huddersfield, so we strongly recommend that you make the most of every droplet of sunshine that Huddersfield gets by coming and sitting in it!

We’ve graced the pages of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide since 2012 and are proud winners of Huddersfield CAMRA’s Cider Pub of the Year for several years running. Of course, as you would expect from a Beerhouses pub, we also offer an excellent range of cask ales as well as a weekly Dram Club, celebrating featured whiskies.

We’re known for our tasting events and manager, John Fletcher, is also known as an Honourable Knight of The Brotherhood of the Pink Elephant, as designated by Huyghe Brewery due to his exceptional conditioning of Delirium beers on the bar. It’s what he insists his friends call him.
