The Sportsman combines heritage (built in 1930 as an ‘improved pub’) and modernity (at the forefront of the real cider movement and the creator of the Huddersfield International Crisp Festival!).
We’ve graced the pages of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide since 2012 and are proud winners of Huddersfield CAMRA’s Cider Pub of the Year for several years running. Of course, as you would expect from a Beerhouses pub, we also offer an excellent range of cask ales as well as a weekly Dram Club, celebrating featured whiskies.
We’re known for our tasting events and manager, John Fletcher, is also known as an Honourable Knight of The Brotherhood of the Pink Elephant, as designated by Huyghe Brewery due to his exceptional conditioning of Delirium beers on the bar. It’s what he insists his friends call him.
Food at The Sportsman
We offer a range of bar snacks, including hot pork scratchings and a wide variety of crisps and nuts. You can also order food from Big Joe’s next door via the hatch in the beer garden to eat in the pub.
Events
We offer a varied programme of events, including tasting nights, Meet the Brewer, and are the original innovators of the Huddersfield International Crisp Festival. See our socials for details of upcoming events.

OUR CHOSEN CHARITIES
Our nominated charity is Project Youth Cancer, whose mission it is to change the way that young people experience cancer. In 2024, we set ourselves a huge target to raise at least £6000 for the charity and a huge target requires a huge challenge. Working with Huddersfield brewers, Magic Rock Brewing, we created the Yorkshire 3 Pints Challenge, which involved carrying 3 barrels up and down the Yorkshire 3 Peaks. This event, and several other fundraising activities resulted in us raising £6600. You can see more information here.

Huddersfield International Crisp Festival returns

It's Thursday, which means it's Dram Club!
The dram of the week is Filey Bay Sherry Cask Reserve.
The sixth release in Filey Bay’s annual Sherry Cask Reserve series, matured entirely in first-fill ex-oloroso casks and showing a spectacular natural colour. This edition leans into richer, darker flavours that complement the distillery’s naturally light and fruity character.

Happy Tuesday Huddersfield!
Exciting new devolopments on the works outside the pub as we have a new mystery! Kirklees Council obviously heard all of the buzz around TRU's mysterious white sheet and the wonders it's probably hiding, so they've given us a mysterious orange box this morning. And the question on everyones lips is of course "what's in the box?". Is it aliens? Is it David Blaine? Is it a block of ice with Drake's new album frozen in the middle of it?
Nobody knows the answer, and there's only one way to find out... come and drink at The Sportsman and watch the box (and the sheet) like a hawk with a taste for world class beer of course! And today's a good day to do it because it's TUESDAY TREATS DAY! All your favourite drinks at a fraction of the price all day, including a locally brewed, perfectly conditioned and expertly poured pint of Mallinsons Brewing Company Jester for just £3.20! See you soon 🍻
