The Sportsman combines heritage (built in 1930 as an ‘improved pub’) and modernity (at the forefront of the real cider movement and the creator of the Huddersfield International Crisp Festival!).
We’ve graced the pages of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide since 2012 and are proud winners of Huddersfield CAMRA’s Cider Pub of the Year for several years running. Of course, as you would expect from a Beerhouses pub, we also offer an excellent range of cask ales as well as a weekly Dram Club, celebrating featured whiskies.
We’re known for our tasting events and manager, John Fletcher, is also known as an Honourable Knight of The Brotherhood of the Pink Elephant, as designated by Huyghe Brewery due to his exceptional conditioning of Delirium beers on the bar. It’s what he insists his friends call him.
Food at The Sportsman
We offer a range of bar snacks, including hot pork scratchings and a wide variety of crisps and nuts. You can also order food from Big Joe’s next door via the hatch in the beer garden to eat in the pub.

OUR CHOSEN CHARITIES
Our nominated charity is Project Youth Cancer, whose mission it is to change the way that young people experience cancer. In 2024, we set ourselves a huge target to raise at least £6000 for the charity and a huge target requires a huge challenge. Working with Huddersfield brewers, Magic Rock Brewing, we created the Yorkshire 3 Pints Challenge, which involved carrying 3 barrels up and down the Yorkshire 3 Peaks. This event, and several other fundraising activities resulted in us raising £6600. You can see more information here.

Huddersfield International Crisp Festival returns
The event no crisp lover will want to miss is back in 2025 In 2024, the greatest homage to crisp consumption was created with the inaugural Huddersfield International Crisp Festival staged at The Sportsman Beerhouse. It’s fair to say it went viral; TV, radio,...
It's your hard earned pint, you deserve to drink it your way ❤
A common debate amongst beer connoisseurs is the correct way to pour a pint; sparkler vs no sparkler, the correct amount of head etc... Our view on it is this: Be fussy. There's no shame in it. There's no right or wrong way to drink your pint, you're the customer, you deserve to have your beer the way you like!
We typically pour your pint like the one on the far right, through a sparkler, a couple of centimetres of head. But if you want that pint topping up, we're not going to be upset with you or start an argument about it. If you prefer a big head like the one in the middle then just let the bar staff know and they'll do the rest. If you want the sparkler taking off, sure, not a problem 🍻
We have plenty of regulars who come to us because we serve their beer just how they like it (if you come often enough, we'll even remember so you don't have to ask!). Come to The Sportsman, and embrace being fussy. Your pint, your way.
