The Sportsman combines heritage (built in 1930 as an ‘improved pub’) and modernity (at the forefront of the real cider movement and the creator of the Huddersfield International Crisp Festival!).
We’ve graced the pages of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide since 2012 and are proud winners of Huddersfield CAMRA’s Cider Pub of the Year for several years running. Of course, as you would expect from a Beerhouses pub, we also offer an excellent range of cask ales as well as a weekly Dram Club, celebrating featured whiskies.
We’re known for our tasting events and manager, John Fletcher, is also known as an Honourable Knight of The Brotherhood of the Pink Elephant, as designated by Huyghe Brewery due to his exceptional conditioning of Delirium beers on the bar. It’s what he insists his friends call him.
Food at The Sportsman
We offer a range of bar snacks, including hot pork scratchings and a wide variety of crisps and nuts. You can also order food from Big Joe’s next door via the hatch in the beer garden to eat in the pub.
Events
We offer a varied programme of events, including tasting nights, Meet the Brewer, and are the original innovators of the Huddersfield International Crisp Festival. See our socials for details of upcoming events.

OUR CHOSEN CHARITIES
Our nominated charity is Project Youth Cancer, whose mission it is to change the way that young people experience cancer. In 2024, we set ourselves a huge target to raise at least £6000 for the charity and a huge target requires a huge challenge. Working with Huddersfield brewers, Magic Rock Brewing, we created the Yorkshire 3 Pints Challenge, which involved carrying 3 barrels up and down the Yorkshire 3 Peaks. This event, and several other fundraising activities resulted in us raising £6600. You can see more information here.

A couple of days ago we put out a post telling you all a little bit about our history and the history of the bridge outside. In that post we talked a little bit about St John's Restaurant Tea & Coffee with The Sportsman Hotel attached next door which is what we were prior to 1930. We even found an old photo of how it looked back then which is really cool to see!
Obviously, over time, things change and things break etc, especially when we're talking about 100+ years of history. But we like to keep small reminders of our history frozen in time, for us it's a massively important part of being a tradional pub and contributes to that cosy atmosphere you experience every time you step foot in The Sportsman.
If you look around the pub, you'll see a lot of nods to our Hammonds Ales days like the beer garden sign and the H on the windows; you'll see the original brass service buttons in the side rooms, historic posters and beer mats dotted around the walls and a million other little details. And in the photo we shared the other day, you may have noticed something that seems familiar... the lamp outside the old restaurant!
Unfortunately, we don't have the original lamp. But where we don't have the originals of important items, we take time and effort in sourcing a replacement that's a close match and that fits the style of what it's replacing, thus keeping that warm, cosy, history-rich atmosphere. Today in our beer garden you'll see a small nod to this iconic lamp and our days as St John's Restaurant Tea & Coffee 🍻 ... See MoreSee Less

It's DRAM CLUB DAY!!! 🥃
Time to have a whisky or two 👌
That's right folks, it's that glorious day of the week where we select a whisky from our vast collection and encourage you all to try a dram of the stuff by slapping on a cheeky discount. This week we have an Islay classic, the fan favourite Ardbeg 10 year 😍
For many peat lovers, Ardbeg 10 ranks among the highest-quality entry-level whiskies on the market. This Islay single malt delivers a powerful burst of peat smoke alongside notes of coffee grounds, dark chocolate, menthol and liquorice sweets. Matured in ex-bourbon barrels, it offers a whirlwind of earthy peat and malty flavours. A classic Islay whisky that’s always deserving of a place in your drinks cabinet.
Was £4.75/6.75... NOW £4.25/6.25!!! See you soon.
